Stepper Motor Driver Upgrade (TMC2208/2209) for Silent Printing

 In From the Workshop

If you’re tired of that high-pitched whine during long overnight prints, the solution most likely lies in the stepper motor drivers on your mainboard. Switching from older A4988 or DRV8825 drivers to the Trinamic family — a silent driver upgrade — is one of the most effective steps you can take to noticeably reduce your printer’s noise level. Because a significant portion of the noise comes not from the motors themselves, but from the way the driver runs them.

What is the difference between TMC2208 and TMC2209?

Both drivers use StealthChop technology to run motors almost inaudibly. The key difference lies in their capabilities:

  • TMC2208: Focused on silence, excellent on most axes. Used in one-way UART mode or standalone.
  • TMC2209: Offers higher current capacity and enables sensorless homing, freeing you from endstop cables.

Why does UART mode matter?

In standalone mode, drivers are configured only roughly. In UART mode, however, you can manage current, microstepping, and StallGuard settings in software through the firmware. This opens the door to both more stable operation and fine-tuning down the road.

Things to check before upgrading

Checking a few things before installing the drivers will save you headaches:

  • Make sure your mainboard supports swappable (socketed) drivers; on some boards the drivers are soldered in.
  • Install the driver in the correct orientation; inserting it backwards can instantly burn it out.
  • If you plan to use UART, you must define the correct driver type on the firmware side.
  • Set the VREF or software current value according to your motor; high current causes overheating.

Let’s be honest: StealthChop is quiet, but at very high speeds or under sudden load it can risk missing steps. That’s why many users prefer a setup that uses StealthChop at low speeds and automatically switches to SpreadCycle mode at high speeds.
