Reproducing a Washing Machine Knob That Fell Off the Robot with Spare-Part 3D Printing

When the program knob of a washing machine comes off in your hand, it often makes you think about replacing the entire machine. Yet writing off a large appliance over a small plastic part is completely unnecessary. Spare-part 3D printing is an extremely practical method for recovering a single lost component at a reasonable cost — especially when the manufacturer no longer supports that model.

Measurement First, Then Modelling

A faithful copy starts with accurate measurements. If you still have the broken pieces of the knob, use a caliper to record these critical values:

• Shaft hole diameter and shape: Is it a D-shaft, splined, or plain cylinder?
• Outer diameter and height of the knob: The body dimensions gripped by the fingers.
• Alignment line or marking: The arrow or scratch that indicates the selected programme.
• Clip/retainer details: The internal geometry that keeps the knob seated.

If the part is completely lost, reverse modelling from spare-part catalogue images and the shaft dimension is necessary. In that case, a few test prints are normal.

The Critical Point: Shaft Connection

It is not the body of the knob but the internal geometry gripping the shaft that is the heart of the matter. If it is too wide the knob spins freely; if too narrow it will not fit at all. Even 0.1–0.2 mm tolerance differences are decisive here, so printing a small test piece containing only the connection section first saves time.

Material Selection and Heat

Washing machine knobs are generally not exposed to high heat directly, but the machine surface can be warm and the part experiences constant mechanical stress. For this reason:

• PETG: In terms of toughness and resistance to moisture and moderate temperatures, it is a well-balanced choice for most home-appliance knobs.
• ABS/ASA: Worth considering where higher heat resistance and UV resistance are needed.

Aesthetic Details
