Bambu Lab’s 3 Million-Printer Factory in Shenzhen Prepares for Construction: What Does the Production Scale Tell Us?

Production capacity in the FDM 3D printing market does not grow only when a new printer model is launched; the infrastructure that makes the machines themselves is also important. According to a 25 September 2026 report by 3D Printing Industry, site preparations are progressing for Bambu Lab’s planned production hub in Shenzhen. The company aims to establish capacity to produce more than three million 3D printers a year at the facility. This should be understood as planned capacity and an ongoing preparation process, not as the current output of a completed factory.

More than a factory announcement: capacity planning

The report says an industrial site is approaching the stage where it will become a physical construction project. The importance of an investment like this lies not in showing exactly how many devices will be produced on a particular date, but in revealing the manufacturer’s long-term capacity plans. If the planned annual capacity is achieved, supply, assembly and shipping processes will need to be designed for larger volumes. However, it would be unwise to draw firm conclusions from the current report about when the facility will reach full capacity or how quickly production will ramp up.

Potential effects for FDM users

An increase in production capacity could affect the desktop FDM ecosystem in several ways:

  • Printer availability: Higher production capacity could help ease supply constraints during periods of strong demand. How this might affect prices for end users will depend on competition, component costs and distribution conditions.
  • Ecosystem growth: A larger installed base of printers could create more demand from users and developers for spare parts, accessories, software and filament. This possibility does not automatically mean that every product will become cheaper.
  • A mass-production approach: Treating desktop printers not just as individual machines but as components of scalable production networks brings FDM’s uses beyond prototyping into sharper focus.

A separate report published by 3D Printing Industry on the same day says that the Huafast production network in Shenzhen has 15,000 machines, 5,600 of which are Bambu Lab devices. This example shows that desktop printers can be brought together and operated as production infrastructure; however, it does not mean that this network is the same facility or operation as the company’s new factory. Keeping the two reports distinct is important to avoid overstating what the capacity announcement means.

For part production, the right question is still the application

Growth in printer production at scale does not automatically determine the right method or the most suitable material for your part. The operating environment, dimensional tolerances, load, temperature and expected quantity are all key factors when assessing whether FDM printing is suitable. That is why you should first clarify the part’s function and requirements, then choose a production method. If you need a prototype, enclosure or custom fixture made with FDM, you can explore the options available through our 3D printing service.

To assess your project’s production costs, see the per-gram pricing approach on our affordable 3D printing prices page. To get an estimated cost for your file, use our instant price calculator. You can also browse our printing materials to narrow down your material choice. Our guide to print orientation is also a useful starting point for understanding how print orientation affects a part’s performance.

In short, the Shenzhen project is a concrete step towards expanding Bambu Lab’s production capacity. For now, the clearest takeaway is that desktop FDM printers are becoming part of larger-scale global production plans. The project’s impact on the market will become clearer as the facility progresses and actual production figures are released.
