When Are Support Structures Needed in 3D Printing?
In FDM printing, each layer is deposited on top of the previous one; overhanging areas that are left suspended in mid-air require temporary support structures. The general rule is: overhangs up to 45 degrees can be printed without supports, while anything more horizontal will sag and need support.
Supports are removed after printing by hand or with a craft knife; slight marks may remain on the contact surfaces. That is why a good designer will orient or redesign a model so that it can be printed with as few supports as possible.
With dual-extruder systems, water-soluble PVA supports can be used to produce complex geometries without leaving any marks. When we review your file, we will let you know whether the part you have ordered requires supports.
