What Is Infill? Which Infill Percentage Should You Choose?
In 3D printing, parts are rarely produced completely solid; the interior volume is partially filled with grid or honeycomb-like patterns. This ratio is called the infill percentage and it directly affects material consumption, weight, print time, and strength.
- 10-20%: Decorative objects, figurines, scale models
- 20-40%: Everyday-use parts, boxes, holders
- 50-80%: Functional parts that carry mechanical loads
- 100%: Critical parts requiring maximum strength
The infill pattern also matters: gyroid provides balanced strength in every direction, while a triangular pattern excels under planar loads. For most applications, 20-40% strikes the right balance between economy and durability.
