Reprinting Broken Parts for Drones and RC Vehicles with 3D-Printed Spare Parts

 In From the Workshop

A hard landing or an unexpected impact often breaks the smallest yet most critical part of your drone — and that part is usually either out of stock or weeks away by shipping. Drone spare part printing steps in exactly at this point: by reproducing a broken landing gear, propeller guard, or camera mount at the original dimensions, it gets your craft back in the air in no time.

Which parts can be printed?

In the RC world, 3D printing is most useful for plastic components that don’t carry mechanical loads but break frequently. Parts that are commonly reprinted include:

  • Propeller guards: The first part to break on impact and the most frequently consumed.
  • Landing gear and legs: Load-bearing pieces that flex and snap on hard landings.
  • Camera and gimbal mounts: Model-specific connectors that are hard to find on the market.
  • Body covers and battery holders: External parts whose design can be personalised.

For parts that spin at high RPM or carry heavy metal loads — such as motor shafts and gearboxes — FDM printing is generally not suitable; original spare parts should be preferred for those.

Material selection for durability

Vibration and impact are constant in RC parts. For this reason, options that absorb shock and can flex come to the fore instead of brittle materials. Materials known for their flexible and tough structure distribute energy by bending rather than breaking on impact. For drones where part weight directly affects flight time, it is important to keep the infill ratio balanced in order to maintain low part weight.

Correct dimensions and file

If you have the original STL file of the broken part, the job is straightforward. If not, carefully measuring and sharing the dimensions of the broken part — or providing the part number if available — will speed up production.

If you are not sure which material is suitable for your model, send a photo of the part and its dimensions through our quick order page and we will suggest the best option based on your flight type.

To avoid missing your next flight, send us the dimensions of the broken part and we will reprint it with the most suitable material.
