Lubricating Linear Rails and Bearings
The axis movements of a 3D printer run on linear rods, rails, and bearings. Dry or dirty slides cause vibration, noise, surface ringing, and long-term permanent wear.
Proper lubrication: first wipe away old grease and accumulated dust with a lint-free cloth, then apply white lithium grease or machine oil to linear bearings and rods, and PTFE-based grease to the lead screw. Apply the lubricant sparingly — excess grease is a dust magnet.
Note: WD-40 is not a lubricant — it dissolves existing grease and causes long-term damage. As a maintenance interval, once a month for heavy use and once every three months for normal use is sufficient. Smooth mechanics mean smooth surfaces.
