How Does Summer Heat Affect Print Quality in FDM? Warping, Heat Creep and Solutions

 In From the Workshop

As of June 2026, summer heat has started to make itself felt across the country. The rising ambient temperature affects not only your comfort but also FDM 3D print quality directly. Many makers working in hot workshops and garages report unexpectedly increased warping (edge lifting) and layer separation problems, especially with PLA and PETG prints. In this article we explain how summer heat interferes with your printing process and which practical steps can help you overcome these problems.

Why Does Summer Heat Increase the Risk of Warping?

The working principle of FDM printers relies on temperature differences. Filament flowing from the nozzle at 200-260 °C cools and solidifies on the bed. This cooling rate varies with ambient temperature: when the workshop temperature rises to 25-30 °C, even in PLA prints the lower layers of the part stay hot longer than the upper layers. This uneven shrinkage shows up as lifting (warping), especially at sharp corners. With high-shrinkage materials such as ABS and ASA, every small setting error can turn into a big problem during the summer months.

A simple law of physics lies behind the increase in warping seen in summer: as the ambient temperature rises, the temperature difference between the part and the environment decreases, which slows the cooling rate. However, depending on part geometry, some areas cool faster while others stay hot. This local temperature difference causes corners to separate from the bed, especially on parts with a wide base. In summer, using a brim and bed adhesives becomes even more important.

Heat Creep: Clogging Halfway Through PLA Prints

Another invisible effect of hot weather is called heat creep. Under normal conditions, the cooling fan keeps the cold zone of the hotend below a certain temperature. But when the ambient temperature rises, the fan’s cooling efficiency drops. As a result, the filament begins to melt inside the heatbreak and the extruder meets resistance. With low-temperature filaments like PLA, this shows up as clogging and flow interruption halfway through the print.

Heat creep is a problem frequently seen in summer, especially on printers running without an enclosure. Cleaning the cooling fan and checking the thermal paste before the heat sets in prevents failed prints caused by heat creep. Using an enclosure, on the other hand, balances the ambient temperature and almost completely eliminates this problem.

Practical Solutions for Temperature Management

Getting quality prints despite the summer heat is possible. Here are a few practical steps that work in the field:

  • Stabilize the ambient temperature: Run your printer in an air-conditioned room or in a corner that does not get direct sunlight. 24-26 °C is the ideal ambient temperature. As a short-term solution, even ventilating the room where the printer sits makes a difference.
  • Review your fan settings: For PLA and PETG, increasing the part cooling fan by 10-15% in summer can be helpful. For ABS and ASA, keep the fan at minimum and stabilize the ambient temperature with an enclosure.
  • Adjust the bed temperature: In hot weather, lowering the bed temperature by 5-10 °C prevents the lower layers from staying hotter than necessary. 55-60 °C is enough for PLA.
  • Use the lower limit of the nozzle temperature: Especially with PETG and PLA, staying in the lower band of the temperature range reduces the risk of stringing and warping. By printing a temperature tower you can find the ideal value specific to your brand.
  • Keep the filament dry: Hot air carries more moisture. Spools left out in the open absorb moisture quickly. Drying filament before printing is even more critical in summer.

Although summer heat demands extra attention in FDM printing, getting flawless prints is possible with the right settings and precautions. Monitoring the ambient temperature and updating fan and bed settings according to the season are simple habits that directly affect quality.
