Annual Maintenance Schedule: A Checklist to Keep Your 3D Printer Running Long
A clogged nozzle mid-print or a suddenly skipping axis is almost always the result of warning signs that were ignored months earlier. Keeping a regular printer maintenance schedule eliminates most of these surprises and noticeably extends the life of your machine. The good news: a maintenance routine takes far less time than you might think.
Why Stick to a Schedule?
The “I’ll fix it when it breaks” approach tends to kick in at the worst possible moment — right in the middle of a production run. Periodic checks catch wear early; tensioning a loose belt in time is far cheaper than replacing a snapped one mid-print.
Weekly Checks
- Clean the bed surface; grease and residue ruin adhesion.
- Remove any plastic build-up around the nozzle tip while it’s hot.
- Visually inspect visible cables and connectors.
Monthly Checks
- Check belt tension; a loose belt causes ghosting and dimensional errors.
- Lubricate linear rails and lead screw bearings with the appropriate grease.
- Check screws and eccentric nuts for tightness.
- Dust off the cooling fans; a blocked fan leads to overheating.
Annual Checks
- Replace the nozzle; a worn nozzle disrupts flow and throws off calibration.
- Fully disassemble the hotend to check for clogs and leaks.
- Renew the PTFE tube (if fitted).
- Clean the ventilation of the mainboard and power supply.
- Run through all calibrations (axes, flow, temperature) from scratch.
A Small Tip
Log every maintenance task with the date you did it. Knowing which nozzle you installed and when will save you a lot of time when diagnosing a problem later on.
Don’t Let Maintenance Wear You Out
This list is a guide for individual users — in a workshop like ours that runs continuous production, maintenance is scheduled and meticulous. Because our machines are always in top condition, your prints come out consistent and flawless.
