Retraction Settings: The Right Way to Eliminate Stringing
When the print head travels from one area to another, it often leaves behind thin strands of plastic — a problem almost every 3D printer user has encountered. The most effective solution is a properly tuned retraction setting. Retraction works by pulling the filament back a few millimetres while the nozzle is moving, which drops the pressure at the nozzle tip and prevents molten plastic from oozing onto the surface.
What Exactly Does Retraction Do?
Molten plastic inside the nozzle is under pressure. When the print head moves through the air, that pressure pushes plastic out. Retraction instructs the extruder to pull the filament back a short distance, instantly relieving that pressure. There are two key parameters: retraction distance and retraction speed.
How Do You Determine the Distance and Speed?
The right values depend on your extruder type and the material you are using. As a general starting point:
- Bowden systems: The long tube means more distance is needed; typically 4–7 mm is a good range to test.
- Direct drive systems: Because the motor sits close to the extruder, 0.5–2 mm is usually sufficient.
- Retraction speed: A range of 25–45 mm/s delivers balanced results for most setups.
- Material differences: PETG oozes more than PLA; increasing the distance slightly for PETG often helps.
Avoid Over-Retracting
Excessive retraction distance or speed causes its own problems. Over-retraction can lead to:
- Clogging: The filament cools in the nozzle throat and creates a blockage.
- Under-extrusion: After retraction the plastic fails to recover fully, leaving gaps in the print.
- Grinding: The extruder gear wears away the filament and loses its grip.
The healthiest approach is to change values in small increments and print a retraction test model each time. Adjust one parameter at a time, observe the result, then move on to the next. This way you can clearly see what each change does.
