PLA Filament: Properties, Advantages, and Applications
PLA (polylactic acid) is a biodegradable thermoplastic produced from renewable sources such as corn starch, and it is the most popular material in 3D printing. With a low printing temperature (190–220°C), minimal shrinkage, and odourless printing process, it is the easiest filament to work with.
It is rigid and dimensionally stable, reproducing sharp details with excellent accuracy. Its main weakness is heat resistance: it begins to soften above 55–60°C, making it unsuitable for hot environments such as the inside of a car. Impact resistance is also lower compared to ABS and PETG.
Ideal applications include prototypes, scale models, decorative objects, educational projects, and parts under low mechanical load. Thanks to its wide range of colour options, it is indispensable for visual and display work.
