How to Achieve a Real Wood Look with Wood-Filled Filament?
If you want to produce a part that feels more like real wood than plastic when you hold it, the material that makes this possible is wood filament. Usually made by combining real wood dust or fibers with a PLA base at a ratio of around 20–40%, this material offers a surprisingly realistic wood texture and scent when processed correctly. In this post we walk you through exactly how to capture that genuine wood look, step by step.
What is wood-filled filament?
Wood filament is produced by blending PLA as the base with approximately 20–40% wood fiber or dust. This filler gives the surface a matte, organic texture and produces a faint wood scent during printing. The result feels far warmer and more natural than standard shiny plastic.
Tonal variation is an advantage, not a flaw
Just as with real wood, tones in wood filament are not always identical. You can use this variability intentionally to add depth to your part.
- Toning with temperature: A higher nozzle temperature darkens the material; a lower temperature gives a lighter tone.
- Layer lines: Visible layer lines help mimic the grain pattern of real wood.
- Sanding: Light sanding after printing brings the surface very close to real timber.
- Varnish and lacquer: When polished with wood-treatment products, the effect is even more striking.
Key points to keep in mind when printing
Wood-filled filament can clog fine nozzles due to its particulate structure. For this reason it is safer to use a nozzle of 0.4 mm or larger. It is not abrasive, but as the fill ratio increases, flowability changes; it is therefore useful to run test prints to find the optimal temperature window. Because it is PLA-based, it is not recommended for parts exposed to high heat.
What projects is it ideal for?
Decorative objects, picture frames, figurines, scale models, and presentation pieces are where wood filament truly shines. It is perfectly suited for aesthetic work that the eye and hand will come into contact with, rather than parts that need to carry mechanical loads. If you have clear expectations about texture and colour, sharing reference images will help clarify the outcome.
