From Saucer to Seedling Tray: Furnish Your Garden with 3D Printing Ideas

 In From the Workshop

Watching a seed push through the soil and reach the surface is one of those small miracles every gardener knows. Yet the daily practice of gardening constantly throws up little shortcomings: sliding pot saucers, crumbling seedling cups, missing plant labels. Garden 3D printing projects are perfectly suited to fill exactly these gaps — you can produce the part you need in precisely the dimensions you want.

Practical garden parts you can print

A handful of parts that gardeners need most often are both simple to design and incredibly useful in daily use:

  • Custom-sized pot saucers: Perfectly fitting, water-retaining saucers for pots that don’t match standard sizes.
  • Seedling and cutting cups: Modular, stackable cups for seed germination and rooting.
  • Plant labels: Durable markers that won’t fade in the rain and can be written on.
  • Irrigation nozzles and adapters: Simple caps that turn a PET bottle into a drip irrigation attachment.
  • Climbing plant trellises: Support frames for climbers such as ivy and tomatoes.

The right material is essential for outdoor use

The biggest test for garden parts is sun and moisture. Standard PLA can become brittle and lose its colour over time outdoors, especially under the summer sun. That’s why we recommend materials with greater UV and moisture resistance — such as PETG or ASA — for parts that will be kept outside permanently. ASA is a particularly good choice for balconies and terraces that receive direct sunlight. For seedling cups that stay in the shade or in contact with soil, PLA is sufficient in most cases.

Small but important details in design

Always add drainage holes to pot saucers and seedling cups; if excess water collects, roots will rot. Increasing the infill percentage slightly for parts that stay constantly wet improves durability. When choosing colours, darker tones absorb more heat under the sun — if you want to keep the soil cool, lighter-coloured filaments are the smarter option. If you’re not sure which material suits your climate conditions, tell us where and how you plan to use the part and we’ll decide together.

If you’re ready to produce the part you have in mind for your balcony or garden, share your dimensions and material preference on our open order page and let’s find the best solution for your green space together.
