Educational Toy Printing for the Kids’ Room: Designing Alphabet and Number Blocks
Children learn letters and numbers best by touching and playing with them. A child tracing the raised “A” on a block with their finger will remember that shape far more permanently than if they had seen it on a screen. That is why alphabet and number blocks are among the most beloved projects in the world of educational toy printing. What’s more, these blocks can be customized to match your child’s age and learning pace.
Our Design Priority: Safety
The first rule for any product aimed at young children is safety. For this reason, there are a few points that deserve particular attention when designing the blocks:
- Blocks large enough not to create a choking hazard yet small enough to fit in a little hand (generally edges longer than 4–5 cm)
- Softened, rounded corners so the block won’t hurt the child’s hand
- Smooth surfaces that can be held without catching or snagging
- A solid form that will not break apart when mouthed or inhaled
Rounding the corners is important not only for comfort but also for safety. Softening sharp edges with a small radius makes handling pleasant and reduces the risk of accidents.
Making Letters and Numbers Legible
The entire educational value lies in how clearly the shapes are perceived. Slightly raising the letters and digits above the surface of the block allows children to learn both visually and by touch. The emboss depth needs to be carefully calibrated: too shallow and it’s hard to distinguish, too deep and dirt collects inside. Using color also supports learning; printing vowels in one color and consonants in another is a small but effective touch.
Material and Finish
For this type of toy, a material that is easy to work with and durable is preferred. Because blocks may end up in a child’s mouth, a smooth, cleanable surface is important — they should be easy to wipe with a damp cloth. A clean surface after printing makes a real difference both for hygiene and for the tactile feel.
Multiplying the idea of a single block to create a complete set covering the whole alphabet and numbers 0–9 is far more efficient than producing them one by one. Personal touches are also possible — such as requesting the letters that make up your child’s name in a special color. You can use our quick quote page to describe the set you have in mind and get an approximate cost.
Watching your child discover their first letters on their own blocks is priceless; you can start thinking today about which letters you want to begin with.
