Creating Custom Plant Holders and Cave Decorations for Aquariums with 3D Printing
Most ready-made aquarium decorations come in standard sizes and often don’t fit your tank’s dimensions or your fish’s habits perfectly. This is exactly where aquarium 3D printing comes in: a bracket that holds your plants exactly where you want them, or a custom-sized cave where juvenile fish can hide — all producible with your own design.
Which materials are safe underwater?
For parts that will remain inside an aquarium, material selection comes first. The goal is to use a plastic that does not leach harmful substances into the water and remains durable over time. In general, the following should be kept in mind:
- PETG: Water-resistant, relatively neutral, and a practical choice for decorative parts.
- Colors and additives: Plain colors are safer than bright metallic or scented filaments.
- Layer sealing: In FDM printing, gaps between layers can accumulate algae over time; high infill density and a clean print reduce this risk.
No plastic is officially certified as “food-grade” for aquarium use; so soaking a new part in clean water for a few days and rinsing it before placing it in the tank is a good habit.
What to look for when designing plant holders?
For holders designed to secure live or artificial plants, a form that does not compress the root zone and has a balanced center of gravity works best. A wide foot that rests on the base prevents tipping in currents. For cave decorations, it is important to adjust the entrance diameter to your fish’s size and to smooth out any sharp corners.
Taking accurate measurements
The most common mistake is miscalculating the area the decoration will occupy inside the tank. Noting the width, depth, and height of the corner where you plan to place it before starting the design will prevent the unpleasant surprise of “it doesn’t fit.”
