Design for Printability: Overhang Angles and the 45-Degree Rule
The golden rule of FDM printing: surfaces inclined up to 45 degrees from vertical can be printed without supports. Because each layer partially bridges over the previous one, plastic is self-supporting up to this angle; beyond that, sagging, stringing, and surface defects begin to appear.
Design solutions: use 45° chamfers instead of horizontal overhangs, design holes with a teardrop profile, and keep wide bridges under 30–40 mm. Orienting the part correctly on the print bed often eliminates the need for supports entirely.
Designs that follow these rules print faster, cheaper, and cleaner — meaning 10 minutes of thought at the design stage translates into real savings in production.
