ASA Filament: The Outdoor-Tough Cousin of ABS

 In From the Workshop

Color fading, embrittlement, and cracking of a part left in direct sunlight for months is the classic nightmare of outdoor 3D prints. This is precisely where ASA filament steps in. Made from acrylonitrile styrene acrylate, this material comes from the same family as ABS — but think of it as the cousin that comes far better prepared for the outside world.

What Sets ASA Apart from ABS?

ABS has long been valued for its mechanical strength and machinability. Its biggest weakness, however, is sensitivity to UV light: ABS parts left in the sun for extended periods turn yellow and develop micro-cracks on the surface. ASA, by virtue of its chemical structure, is far more resistant to UV radiation and weathering. As a result, it retains its color and mechanical properties outdoors for much longer.

Key Application Areas Where ASA Shines

  • Garden and exterior parts: Applications continuously exposed to sunlight, such as sign holders, lamp housings, and irrigation fittings.
  • Automotive accessories: Parts subjected to heat and UV exposure, like mirror covers, grille clips, and under-dashboard components.
  • Antenna and electronics enclosures: Outdoor housings that must withstand rain and sunlight.
  • Outdoor signage and architectural model details: Visible surfaces where color fading is unacceptable.

What to Watch Out for When Printing?

Like ABS, ASA is prone to warping and layer delamination during printing. An enclosed print environment, a heated bed, and a stable ambient temperature directly affect the outcome. It also releases a styrene-based odor while molten, so printing in a well-ventilated or filtered environment is recommended. When these controlled conditions are met, ASA delivers both a smooth surface finish and long-lasting durability.

If you’re confused about whether a particular part should be printed in PLA, PETG, or ASA, the intended use is always the first criterion in material selection. If the part will be used outdoors, ASA is a strong candidate. For detailed pricing, check out our production pricing — we can work together to find the best material for your project.
