7 Tips for First Layer Adhesion Problems
Half of a successful print depends on the first layer: a print that doesn’t adhere properly to the bed will eventually warp or detach. Here is a checklist for this common problem:
- Re-level your bed — the nozzle-to-bed distance must be equal at every point
- Adjust your Z-offset: the first layer should look slightly squished, appearing as matte, flattened lines
- Wipe the bed with isopropyl alcohol; even a thin layer of finger oil can ruin adhesion
- Confirm the bed temperature matches your material’s requirements
- Reduce first layer speed by 50% and print the first layer 10–20% thicker
- Use a surface-appropriate adhesive such as a PEI sheet, glue stick, or hairspray
- If needed, add a brim to increase the base surface area
If the problem persists after following these steps, check the bed for warping (dips or bumps).
