3D Printing for School Projects: A Guide to Making a Solar System Model for Science Fair
When the science fair approaches, styrofoam balls and paint markers are the first option most students think of — yet with a little planning, you can achieve a far more impressive result. A scaled Solar System model made with a 3D printing school project approach stands out in front of the judges with its detailed surface textures and its durability that won’t shatter when dropped. In this guide, we explain how to plan such a model from scratch.
Set the Scale from the Start
Preserving the true size ratios of the planets one-to-one won’t fit on a table; if you build the Sun to true scale, Earth becomes the size of a pinhead. That’s why using two separate scales is a common approach: roughly preserve the size ratios of the planets relative to each other, but scale down the Sun symbolically. When planning your model, decide on the following:
- Maximum size: Choose the diameter of the largest planet (Jupiter) to fit on a table and be portable, then scale everything else accordingly.
- Solid or hollow: Printing large spheres hollow with low infill saves material and reduces weight.
- Surface texture: Add details like Mars’s craters or Jupiter’s bands as raised relief on the model.
Color, Assembly, and Presentation
Painting the planets by hand with acrylic paint after a single-color print is the most practical approach and also shows the student’s own effort. Printing spheres as two hemispheres and gluing them together reduces the need for support material and gives a cleaner surface. To show the orbits, you can mount the planets on rods of different heights on a transparent acrylic plate.
Material selection
PLA is ideal for this type of project: it is odorless, easy to paint, and comes in a wide range of colors. If you’re worried about drops while carrying the model to school, PETG gives a somewhat tougher feel for the main body parts.
If your design file is ready or you’ve found a ready-made model, you can review our production pricing based on print size and color plan, and schedule your project to be delivered on time.
