How to Print in Multiple Colors with a 3D Printer (AMS/MMU)
A standard FDM printer prints in a single color; there are three approaches to multi-color printing. 1) Manual swap: the print is paused at a specific layer and the filament is changed — free and effective for layer-based color transitions. 2) Multi-material units: systems such as AMS (Bambu Lab) or MMU (Prusa) automatically switch between 4–16 spools and can use multiple colors within the same layer. 3) Dual extruder: two independent print heads deposit two materials with virtually no waste.
In multi-material systems, a purge waste is generated with every color change — this is why multi-color prints have higher time and material costs.
We offer a color-transition production service for branded promotional items and multi-color sign/label prints; simply check the second plastic option on the order form.
